How did you get your start in commercial real estate?
I was in the computer business in Huntsville for about 30 years, but toward the end of that, I realized I wanted to do something different. So, I decided to get my real estate license, and when I retired in Huntsville, I got into real estate.
What do you like about your job in commercial real estate?
Dealing with people.
What would you say is your specialty within commercial real estate?
I have concentrated, really, on large real estate sales on the Beltline and Sixth Avenue in Decatur. I really have focused on those two areas of Decatur and because of that, I sold the property where the Courtyard Marriot is located.
Do you have any advice for success or advice for someone starting a career in this industry?
It's a tough industry, especially if you don't have any other income. However, the main thing you have to do, to sell anything, is to establish a way to get in the doors of those people you are targeting. Join and get involved in groups, be a part of civic organizations and clubs, etc - word of mouth and networking is how most of this business works. Meet people. Earn their respect and trust. Until you establish a reputation, all you have are contacts. Once you begin to do business, take care of your people. Be honest.
You want people, when they have a commercial real estate need, to have you be the FIRST name they come to.
